Calories Vs Hormones For Fat Loss - Why Losing Weight Becomes Harder As we Age
Calories vs Hormones for Fat Loss – Why Losing Weight Becomes Harder as We Age

Is fat loss just about calories?
One of the biggest debates in the fitness industry is whether fat loss comes down to calories in versus calories out or whether our hormones play a bigger role.
The truth is that both matter.
There is no debating that to lose body fat, we need to be in an energy deficit. If we consistently consume fewer calories than we use over time, body fat is generally lost. However, after more than 20 years working as a personal trainer, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: for many clients in their 40s, 50s and beyond, creating and maintaining that calorie deficit often becomes much more challenging.
As a personal trainer in Marston Moretaine, working with clients from Woburn, Tring and Berkhamsted, I regularly help busy professionals understand why losing weight isn’t always as straightforward as it once was.
Why fat loss feels easier in your 20s
Think back to your late teens or twenties.
Many of us were naturally more active without even thinking about it.
We walked more.
We played sports.
We recovered faster.
We often had fewer family and work commitments.
Hormone production was generally at healthier levels, helping to support muscle mass, recovery, motivation and overall energy levels.
Even if our diet wasn’t perfect, our bodies often coped remarkably well.
What changes as we get older?
As we move into our 40s and 50s, life changes considerably.
Many people now have:
- Busy careers.
- Family responsibilities.
- Less time to exercise.
- Poorer sleep.
- Higher stress levels.
At the same time, muscle mass naturally begins to decline if we don’t actively maintain it through resistance training.
For many people, hormone levels also change with age, which can influence energy levels, recovery, appetite and body composition.
None of these changes mean fat loss becomes impossible, but they can make it more difficult to consistently achieve the habits needed to stay in a calorie deficit.
The role of insulin and blood sugar
One pattern I regularly see when coaching clients is that many arrive having been told by their GP that they are pre-diabetic or have developed insulin resistance.
This is becoming increasingly common.
One reason is that as we age, our bodies may become less efficient at handling large amounts of carbohydrate at once, particularly when combined with inactivity and excess body fat.
Meals high in refined carbohydrates can produce larger rises in blood glucose, which require insulin to help move glucose into cells. Repeated high blood sugar levels over time, particularly alongside excess calorie intake and weight gain, increase the risk of insulin resistance in some people.
This is one reason why improving food quality, increasing daily activity and building muscle through resistance training can make such a difference.
Muscle is one of your greatest tools for fat loss
One of the most powerful things we can do as we age is preserve and build muscle.
Resistance training doesn’t just improve strength and appearance.
It also helps maintain lean body mass while dieting and improves the body’s ability to handle glucose.
Combined with a sensible nutrition plan, this can make long-term fat loss easier to maintain.
This is one of the reasons why every programme in my private personal training studio in Marston Moretaine includes progressive strength training alongside practical nutritional coaching.
So, is it calories or hormones?
In my experience, it’s rarely one or the other.
Calories still matter.
Hormones matter too.
Sleep matters.
Stress matters.
Muscle mass matters.
Activity levels matter.
The most successful fat loss programmes don’t focus on just one of these factors—they address all of them together.
That’s exactly how I coach my clients.
